Scrivener is a writing software and app for writers. The software company Literature and Latte created Scrivener to help writers have everything in one place. Scrivener is available for macOS as Scrivener 3 and it can connect with the iOS Scrivener app for the iPad. As of now, only the first version of Scrivener for Windows is available, but it will update to Scrivener 3 for free when the new version comes out.

You can put the outlines into separate folders and have the freedom to reorganize them with the drag-and-drop function.
Writing also involves a lot of research, so a digital corkboard will come in handy, for the research data and planning. The corkboard is a useful tool if you are a snowflake writer, or want to keep your picture prompts where you can access them easily. You can write descriptions on the cards, another helpful function that allows you to store all your thoughts and information in one place. If you are not a fan of the corkboard, you can use the Collections function, which works as a smart list to help you track your writing. The Collections function is useful if you want to keep track of the chapters and the story flow.
Easily distracted? The full-screen writing and dark mode can help you focus on what is important: the deadline. The full-screen mode can eliminate on-screen distractions, and it also allows you to set your own screen layout for maximum productivity. To help you hit the desired word count, you can set a target and watch as the progress bar fills up, as you continue writing towards your goal.
When you are writing fiction or trying to finish a research thesis, metadata helps you organize your thoughts and projects. You can color code the data to suit your needs. You can also create your own check boxes, lists and dates. The Custom option allows you to use this function for all kinds of writing genres.
For a new writer, writing can seem like a daunting task. Scrivener comes with some templates to help you start off on the right foot. The program contains character templates and location sheets for fiction writers, and non-fiction templates for academic or non-fiction authors. Scrivener can help you achieve your writing goals more easily because it’s a program for authors created by authors. I use Scrivener and I like all the tools it offers, especially those that helped me with my novel. I use Dropbox to store my files, which allows me to sync between devices and work whenever I want. Scrivener comes with a “household” license, so you can install it on all your devices running on the same operating system, i.e. Windows or macOS. If you are planning to work on different devices like I do, make sure that the files are up-to-date and synced.
Another great reason to use Scrivener is its backup function. Scrivener allows you to manually backup your projects to a computer or a cloud storage, but it also saves your files before you exit the program. It is every author’s nightmare to lose the words he’s typed, and Scrivener understands that. The program keeps the five most recent backups for any project in the folder of your choice.
The best reason to use Scrivener is the supportive community of writers that use the program. While Scrivener comes with a manual, you can ask any question in the forum or on the users’ community page and someone will assist you in solving your problem. Scrivener is a reasonably priced writing program with a lot of authors using many of its functions. If you need a program with more than a word count option, definitely give it a go.
